The practice of sending out wedding invitations is quite simple, though there are quite a few choices you will have to make along the way. Most couples get their invitations from a party or card store. These stores have giant books with hundreds of designs to choose from. Alternatively, many couples are now ordering their invitations on the internet. Whichever you choose, be sure to order them well in advance. It can take weeks for invitations to arrive and if there is a misspelling or other error you'll need time to get them fixed.
There are countless styles for you to choose from and the choice depends on your taste. Once you have picked one out you'll also need to decide on the writing inside. The invitation books contain many different samples or you can write it yourself. Most sets of wedding invitations will come with two envelopes. The larger envelope contains the invitation itself, as well as directions to the ceremony and reception, an RSVP card, and a smaller envelope that is unsealed. This will be used by your invitees to mail back the RSVP card. In addressing the envelopes, you have a few options. If you have neat handwriting you can address each of them yourself, though this will take a good bit of time. Or you can print the addresses on mailing labels using a fancy font. You should use clear mailing labels as they will look nicer on the invitation. Or you can have the addresses written by a professional calligrapher. A calligrapher is someone who is skilled in the art of beautiful writing. This can be a very impressive touch. However, it can also get quite expensive, especially for large weddings. When should I mail my wedding invitations? The rule of thumb is to mail them six weeks before the wedding date. This gives your guests plenty of time to check their schedules and make plans to be available. It also gives you plenty of time to get all of the RSVP cards back and figure out your headcount. When mailing your invitations you can look for pretty stamps from the post office. The US post office issues a special love stamp each year specifically designed for wedding invitations. It is issued at a special rate to cover the cost of mailing the extra weight of typical wedidng invitations. One final thought. When you are calculating the number of invitations you will need always add a few to the total. You'll want to have a couple extra on hand in case of errors during the addressing. And you should also keep one for yourself as a memento. It makes a nice addition to a scrapbook, or you can even have it framed.
